If You Get Dental Implants, Will Insurance Come Through For You?

If you’ve spent any amount of time looking into methods of tooth replacement, you’ve probably seen plenty of information about what they have to offer in terms of both durability and realism. In fact, you may have been swayed completely, and are ready to replace your tooth.

However, you may have also become slightly concerned about payment, and particularly whether you can expect your dental insurance plan to cover your dental implant. If you’re curious, here’s what you should know about that possibility.

Can I Expect my Dental Implant to Be Covered?

For the most part, dental insurance companies will not cover dental implants. Unfortunately, as incredible as they are, and as big a difference as they can make in the lives of people who need them, they’re still considered to be elective by most dental plans.

That said, some insurance companies will pay for a portion of the dental implant procedure, so it may be smart to investigate that further.

Covering Implants vs Restorations

Dental implants come in three parts: the metal post that is surgically inserted into the jaw, the restoration that sits on top (either a crown, bridge, or denture), and the metal abutment that connects the two.

Frankly, there is little-to-no chance that your insurance will pay for either the necessary materials or the placement of the post or the abutment. The only exceptions are situations where you’re missing all of your teeth and are facing medical complications as a result.

However, many more dental plans will cover a portion of the restoration, even if they don’t pay for the post. It’s worth looking into what you can get from your plan in particular.

Timing the Procedure to Maximize Coverage

If you are lucky enough to have your dental implant covered, even partially, it’s worth noting that now is a great time to get started with the procedure. It’s the end of the year, so odds are that you’ve already contributed toward your deductible. This resets at the start of the year, so if you want to reap the benefits of the money you’ve already spent, you may want to get started with your care before the end of the year.
